Legendary City of Robin Hood
Famous for its association with Robin Hood, Nottingham is in the very heart of England. The outlaw’s legend lives on, with many city streets and buildings named after him and his Merry Men. A Robin Hood statue sits at the foot of Nottingham Castle, on a small hill with historic pubs built into it. Also cut into the rock are visitable caves extending under the city.
The Old Market Square is the largest in the UK and becomes a city beach in the summer, with rides and a small pool. Permanent fixtures are the impressive Council House with its Exchange Arcade shops, and the several Nottingham hotels with parking in the surrounding area.
During the 19th century, Nottingham was an important lace-making centre and many Victorian warehouses and buildings remain in the Lace Market area. Neighbouring Hockley is home to the National Ice Centre and independent shops, while the biggest shopping centres are Broadmarsh and the Victoria Centre.
In the western suburbs, by Nottingham University, Wollaton Park surrounds an Elizabethan stately home, while east of Trent Bridge cricket ground is the National Water Sports Centre in Holme Pierrepont. Sherwood Forest, Robin’s stomping ground, is near Mansfield, while East Midlands Airport is south-west of Long Eaton.

Nottingham is a fabulous city.
Nottingham is a fabulous city. I mainly was in Westbridgford, as cosmopolitan suburb with lovely park, fabulous bars and cafes, lots of beauty and Spa establishments Great leisure facilities , including The Reformer Studio, a library which holds events and artisan market at weekends. The University of Nottingham campus is a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city with its grassy spaces, views of the lake and beautiful trees. We had a car, and we were provided with a free parking permit for the duration of our stay. Transport around the city is easy by tram or bus. We ate at the Orchard restaurant on campus where the menu is good, but there is also a small well stocked supermarket in the Portland building. Wollaton Hall and deer park nearby is well worth a visit with lovely walks, a nice cafe and the house has interesting exhibitions and friendly informative staff. There is also a childrens; outdoor play area.

None of the shops display the number of the street that they are in. I spent some time trying to find a particular shop. I found the street, but without numbers on the properties, I walked back and forth. I did not visit any of the 'popular places' listed below. A shopping centre is being demiolished in the middle of the city, involving walking around a building site. Very clean and pleasant traffic free city centre. Some nice high quality shops, with several empty unoccupied shops as in most city and town centres. It is over 40 years since my last visit and I feel sure it has improved since my last visit.

We were warmly greeted and made our way to the room which was perfect for us. We had a dual-aspect room and one view was of the city centre. There were tea and coffee-making facilities and complimentary bottled water. For a hotel so close to the centre, it was very quiet. Breakfast was copious with some lovely presentation details that my son loved, such as the yoghurt bottles and jars. Would definitely stay again.
